I stepped aside.
“You can leave. But the bank appointment is tomorrow morning, and my attorney will be there.”
He paused.
“And what happens after that?”
“That depends on what the evidence shows.”
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he walked out.
Nancy followed him.
Alex remained seated, staring at the table.
After a while, he removed his wedding ring and placed it beside his phone.
“I need time to understand who I’ve been married to,” he said quietly.
I sat beside him.
“I know.”
He looked at me.
“Did you ever suspect her?”
I thought about all the evenings Nancy had spent in my house, the private conversations, the shared holidays, the years of friendship.
“No,” I admitted. “I never imagined she would do something like this.”
Alex nodded.
“Neither did I.”
He stood and walked toward the door.
Before leaving, he turned back.
“For what it’s worth, Vanessa, I’m glad you didn’t agree to keep this quiet.”
