My husband proposed that my friend and I swap husbands for a week — I thought he was joking until I discovered she was actually willing to do it, so I agreed and decided to teach them both a lesson

Sean’s voice rose.

“You’re twisting my words.”

“No,” Claire replied. “I’m finally asking you the same questions you refuse to answer.”

I looked at the photograph again.

The signature was mine.

The document around it was not the document I had been told I was signing.

I felt sick.

Claire reached for my hand.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I believed him.”

I squeezed her fingers.

“So did I.”

For the first time that night, I felt less alone.

Not because the evidence had proved every suspicion. It hadn’t. The bank still needed to investigate the transactions, the signature, and the loan application. But the people who had been expected to remain silent were finally willing to speak.

Sean looked around the room.

Rachel. Claire. Alex. Me.

His own story was slipping away from him.

He picked up his suitcase.

“Fine. Do whatever you want. But don’t expect me to sit here while you destroy my reputation.”
