“Has Richard admitted anything about the threats?”
“Not to us. That remains under investigation.”
I rubbed my forehead.
“Does he still want to speak to me?”
“Yes.”
“Then he can speak through you.”
Margaret paused.
“That’s what I advised.”
For a while, I believed that was the end of the worst of it.
Richard’s secrets had been exposed. Vesna was safe. Sophie was being cared for. The financial records were in the hands of people who could examine them properly.
I had started rebuilding my life.
I returned to work, met friends I had neglected, and began making plans for the future that no longer included a man who treated love like a contract he could rewrite whenever it suited him.
Then Margaret called again.
“Claire, there’s something you need to know about the documents concerning Sophie.”
I stopped what I was doing.
“What happened?”
“The investigators obtained an earlier version of the trust proposal. It was created before Sophie was born.”
