The sedan drove away without its headlights turning on until it reached the end of the street.
I watched the recording three times.
Then I woke Richard.
“Someone came to the house last night.”
He opened his eyes, annoyed.
“What?”
I showed him the video.
For one brief moment, his face went completely blank.
Then he sat up.
“Did he leave anything?”
“How would I know?”
He stared at me.
“Don’t touch the mailbox. Don’t go outside. Don’t call anyone.”
I folded my arms.
“Why?”
He got out of bed and began dressing.
“Because I know who that is.”
“Who?”
He didn’t answer.
He simply took his keys and walked out of the room.
I followed him downstairs.
He stopped at the front door.
“Claire, stay inside.”
Then he looked at me, and for the first time in our marriage, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
“If anyone asks you about me,” he said, “you know nothing.”
