I had forgotten how frightening Daniel could be when he spoke softly.
“She called me,” I said.
“This has nothing to do with you anymore.”
Chloe suddenly grabbed something from the kitchen counter.
A folder.
She shoved it into my hands.
“Open it.”
I looked down.
My name was written across the first page.
Underneath it was a number I didn’t recognize.
My stomach tightened.
“What is this?”
Chloe looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Put that down.”
“Tell her what you’ve been doing.”
“Chloe.”
“Tell her!”
Her voice cracked.
Daniel took one step toward us.
“Put that folder down right now.”
I opened it.
The first document was a bank statement.
My name was on it.
But I had never seen the account before.
I turned the page.
Another account.
Another document.
Then another.
My hands began shaking.
“Daniel…”
He said nothing.
Chloe whispered, “He’s been doing this for years.”
I looked at her.
“Doing what?”
She wiped her face.
“Using your name.”
Daniel suddenly moved toward us.
I stepped backward.
And for the first time in seventeen years, I realized something terrifying.
I didn’t know my husband at all.
Chapter 2 — The Folder
I took the folder home that night.
