Why would Chloe be calling me at two in the morning?
I answered.
“Hello?”
All I heard was crying.
Not quiet crying.
Panicked sobbing.
“Please,” Chloe whispered.
“Please come here.”
I sat up in bed.
“What happened?”
“You need to see this yourself.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I can’t explain it over the phone.”
Her voice broke.
“Please. I’m begging you.”
I should have hung up.
Instead, I got dressed and drove to their house.
The house was enormous.
Daniel had apparently bought it shortly after the divorce.
When Chloe opened the door, I immediately knew something was wrong.
The living room looked like someone had been searching through it.
A lamp was broken.
There was glass on the kitchen floor.
A dining chair had been knocked over.
Chloe’s mascara was running down her cheeks.
“What happened?” I asked.
She grabbed my hand.
“He’s inside.”
I froze.
“Daniel?”
She nodded.
I stepped inside.
And there he was.
Sitting at the dining table.
Completely calm.
Daniel looked at me like I was the person who had invaded his home.
Then he looked at Chloe.
“Why did you call her?”
Chloe didn’t answer.
Daniel slowly stood.
His voice was quiet.
“You need to leave.”
