She looked at me through her tears.
“I wasn’t?”
“No.”
I took a breath.
“Daniel made that decision.”
For the first time, Chloe looked relieved.
Then my attorney called.
She had found something else.
Something much bigger.
“There’s a signature on one of the documents,” she said.
“Your signature.”
“I never signed it.”
“I know.”
She paused.
“Then we need a handwriting expert.”
My heart began pounding.
Because if the signature had been forged, Daniel wasn’t simply hiding money.
He had crossed a line that could change everything.
Chapter 4 — The Trap
The handwriting expert confirmed what I already knew.
The signature wasn’t mine.
It was a forgery.
The discovery changed everything.
My attorney filed the necessary reports, and suddenly Daniel’s confidence disappeared.
He started calling me.
At first, he was angry.
Then he was apologetic.
Then he became desperate.
“I can explain.”
I ignored him.
“You don’t understand what happened.”
I ignored that too.
Finally, he left a voicemail.
“I made mistakes.”
That was the first time I heard Daniel admit even that much.
But it wasn’t enough.
The investigation uncovered more documents.
Some involved money transferred during our marriage.
Others involved properties Daniel had purchased without telling me.
There were accounts I had never known existed.
