The email had been sent eight months before our divorce.
My hands went numb.
“She?”
Chloe asked.
“Who was he talking about?”
I already knew.
Me.
I read it again.
Then another email appeared.
This one was sent six weeks before Daniel announced that he was unhappy.
“Once the house is transferred, the divorce should be straightforward.”
I couldn’t breathe.
He hadn’t left because he suddenly stopped loving me.
He had been planning his exit while pretending to be my husband.
But there was one question that still bothered me.
Why bring Chloe into it?
My attorney found the answer.
Daniel had transferred some assets into accounts connected to Chloe because he believed they would be harder to trace back to him.
Chloe wasn’t his partner in the plan.
She was another person he was using.
When she realized that, she broke down.
“I really thought he loved me.”
I looked at her.
“I know.”
She started crying.
I didn’t comfort her immediately.
For two years, I had blamed her for destroying my family.
Now I was looking at another woman who had been deceived by the same man.
Eventually, I reached across the table and took her hand.
“You weren’t the reason my marriage ended.”
