My husband invited his ex-wife to his birthday because she was “still family”

Money he couldn’t afford to repay.

And when the business began collapsing, he started moving assets around.

Including the house.

My hands went numb.

“You put our home at risk?”

“I was trying to save the company.”

“You risked our home while I was pregnant?”

“I thought I could fix it.”

“You thought.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That seems to be your favorite phrase.”

He stood.

“I love you.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t get to say that right now.”

“I do love you.”

“Then you should have trusted me with the truth.”

He couldn’t answer.

I picked up my purse.

“Where are you going?”

“Somewhere safe.”

“You’re pregnant.”

“I know.”

“You can’t just leave.”

I stared at him.

“Watch me.”

I walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

I turned around.

“Do you know what the worst part is?”

Mark looked at me.

“It isn’t Claire.”
