The numbers were not immediately alarming. There were loans, property valuations, projected returns, and several business entities. But one document caught my attention: a personal guarantee bearing my name.
I had never signed it.
The guarantee supposedly authorized a substantial loan secured partly against our jointly owned home.
I placed the document on the kitchen table and waited for Daniel to return from work.
When he came in, I asked him about it.
He glanced at the paper and immediately looked away.
“It’s a standard form.”
“Then why is my signature on it?”
He rubbed his forehead.
“Dad said it was necessary to complete the transaction.”
“I didn’t sign it, Daniel.”
He stared at me for several seconds.
“Maybe you signed something when I brought the paperwork home. You sign so many things.”
“No. I didn’t.”
His expression hardened.
“Are you accusing me of forging your signature?”
“I’m asking you to explain how my name ended up on a financial guarantee I never approved.”
