One evening, he came to my attorney’s office to discuss a proposed settlement of our personal financial claims.
He looked tired.
“My father says you’re trying to destroy him.”
I put down the document I was reading.
“I am trying to recover what was taken from our household and protect myself from allegations I did not cause.”
“He says you could have handled this privately.”
“I tried.”
Daniel stared at the table.
“He thinks you want revenge.”
I considered that.
There had been nights when I imagined standing in front of Arthur and telling him exactly what I thought of him. I had imagined Vivian apologizing in front of everyone she had ever impressed. I had imagined Daniel watching his parents lose the power they had used against me.
Those thoughts had given me a temporary sense of satisfaction.
But revenge was not the purpose of the case.
If I allowed my anger to decide what I wanted, I could become just as reckless as the people I was trying to hold accountable.
