My father-in-law laughed when I walked into court alone and said I was too broke to afford a lawyer, never realizing I had spent years as a military attorney

Arthur stopped smiling.

Vivian sat rigidly, her hands clasped in her lap.

His attorney objected to portions of the presentation, arguing that some communications required additional foundation and that the court should not draw conclusions before the evidence was fully tested.

The judge agreed that the merits of disputed evidence would have to be determined through the proper process.

But she also made it clear that the court would not treat the allegations against me as established facts merely because Arthur’s company had placed them in a complaint.

Then she asked a question.

“Mr. Hale, did you personally instruct anyone to prepare or submit the guarantee bearing Ms. Hale’s disputed signature?”

Arthur shifted in his chair.

“I authorized my staff to prepare the necessary documents for the transaction.”

“That was not my question.”

His attorney stood.

“Your Honor, my client would like to clarify the context.”

“He may answer the question first.”
