My father-in-law laughed when I walked into court alone and said I was too broke to afford a lawyer, never realizing I had spent years as a military attorney

I followed it.

Then I discovered the missing money.

Our joint savings account had been used to make several transfers to an investment company connected to Arthur. Daniel had authorized the transfers, supposedly for temporary business expenses. Some of the money had been returned, but a significant portion remained unaccounted for.

When I confronted him, he finally admitted that the company was struggling.

“How much?” I asked.

He stared at the floor.

“Daniel, how much of our money is gone?”

“About eighty thousand dollars.”

I felt as though the room had tilted.

That money represented years of savings, careful budgeting, and sacrifices we had made while I advanced through my career. It was the fund we had planned to use for Sophie’s education and to pay down our mortgage.

“Where did it go?”

He said the company had suffered unexpected losses.

I asked for the records.

He refused.

“You’re not my supervisor, Alex.”
