My Ex’s Mother Knocked at My Door at 11 P.M. and Whispered, “I Have Nowhere Else to Go.” By Morning, My Entire Life Had Changed.

Then I noticed a name on one page.

Daniel Price.

Jenna’s fiancé.

I had met Daniel once, briefly, at a family gathering. He had been charming, polished, and almost aggressively friendly.

According to the documents, Daniel had approached Robert years earlier about investing in a property development business. Robert had declined after discovering serious inconsistencies in the company’s finances.

Sarah covered her mouth.

“Jenna told me Daniel was a successful investor.”

“Maybe he was successful at convincing people he was.”

The flash drive contained copies of emails and financial records. We didn’t attempt to draw conclusions ourselves. We made copies, secured the originals, and arranged to meet David Collins immediately.

But one document caught Sarah’s attention.

It was a letter from Robert, dated just weeks before his death.

She read it silently.

Then she began to cry.

“What does it say?” I asked gently.

She handed it to me.

Sarah, I hope I’m wrong about Daniel. I hope Jenna has chosen a better man than I believe she has. But if she ever asks you to sign away control of the house, please remember that protecting someone from the consequences of their choices is not the same as loving them.
