My Ex’s Mother Knocked at My Door at 11 P.M. and Whispered, “I Have Nowhere Else to Go.” By Morning, My Entire Life Had Changed.

“I think Robert knew something was wrong.”

She handed me the note.

It was short.

Sarah, if you’re reading this, something may have happened that I wasn’t able to explain while I was alive. The key belongs to the safety deposit box at First County Bank. Please don’t sign anything further until you’ve spoken to David Collins. And whatever Jenna tells you about the money, don’t assume she’s telling you the whole truth.

I read it twice.

“When did he write this?”

“I don’t know.”

Her hands began to tremble.

“Robert died three years ago. Why would he write something like this?”

“Maybe he was worried about something.”

“About Jenna?”

I looked at the note again.

“Possibly.”

Sarah pressed her fingers to her lips.

“He never told me he had a safety deposit box.”

“Then let’s find out what’s inside.”

The next morning, we visited the bank.

After verifying Sarah’s identity, the manager led us to a private room and returned with a small metal box.
