My Ex’s Mother Knocked at My Door at 11 P.M. and Whispered, “I Have Nowhere Else to Go.” By Morning, My Entire Life Had Changed.

I crossed my arms.

“That’s funny. I was about to say the same thing about you.”

She stepped closer.

“Stay out of my business, Mark.”

“Gladly. Once you stop making your business everybody else’s emergency.”

For a moment, I thought she might slap me.

Instead, she grabbed her handbag.

“You’ll both regret this.”

She stormed out.

Sarah remained perfectly still until the front door closed.

Then she sat down heavily on the sofa.

“I don’t know my own daughter anymore.”

I sat beside her.

“Maybe you’ve spent so long trying to protect her that you haven’t had a chance to see what she’s become.”

Sarah covered her face.

“I don’t want to hate her.”

“You don’t have to hate her to hold her accountable.”

She lowered her hands.

“What if she really is in trouble?”

“Then she needs to tell the truth.”

Sarah nodded slowly.

Then she reached for my hand.
