My Ex’s Mother Knocked at My Door at 11 P.M. and Whispered, “I Have Nowhere Else to Go.” By Morning, My Entire Life Had Changed.

“You’re defending him?”

“I’m defending myself.”

“Mom, do you have any idea what people will think?”

Sarah let out a quiet, disbelieving laugh.

“That’s what you’re worried about?”

“You’re embarrassing me!”

“Jenna, you sold my house without my permission. You drained my accounts. You left me standing outside with my belongings. And you’re worried about embarrassment?”

Jenna’s face reddened.

“You don’t understand what I’ve been dealing with.”

“Then explain it.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s complicated!”

Sarah looked at her for a long moment.

“It’s always complicated when you’re asked to take responsibility.”

Jenna turned away.

Then she noticed Sarah’s suitcase beside the stairs.

“Are you planning to stay here permanently?”

“That’s none of your business.”

Jenna gave a bitter laugh.

“Of course it is. You’re my mother.”

“Being your mother doesn’t mean I have to surrender my life to you.”

Jenna’s expression hardened.

Then she looked at me.

“You have no idea who you’re getting involved with.”
