Sarah looked away.
“What if we get hurt?”
“We might.”
“What if it doesn’t work?”
“Then we’ll have been honest about what we wanted instead of pretending we wanted nothing.”
Her eyes returned to mine.
“And what do you want?”
I smiled gently.
“Right now? To kiss you. But only if you want me to.”
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she reached up, rested her hand against my cheek, and whispered, “I’ve been trying very hard not to want that.”
I barely had time to smile before she kissed me.
It was gentle and uncertain at first.
Then she pulled back just enough to look at me.
“Tell me you’re not going to make a joke.”
I considered the request.
“I can try.”
“Mark.”
“I’m concentrating.”
She laughed and kissed me again.
When we finally separated, she rested her forehead against mine.
“This is a terrible idea,” she whispered.
