Then Sarah’s phone rang.
Her expression changed when she saw the caller’s name.
Jenna.
She stared at the screen.
“Are you going to answer?” I asked.
“I don’t know.”
“Then don’t decide because you’re frightened. Decide because you know what you want.”
Sarah swallowed.
Then she answered.
“Hello, Jenna.”
I couldn’t hear the voice on the other end, but I watched Sarah’s face as she listened.
First came disbelief.
Then anger.
Finally, a kind of terrible sadness.
“No,” Sarah said quietly. “You don’t get to tell me I’m overreacting.”
A pause.
“No, I will not sign anything else.”
Another pause.
Her grip tightened around the phone.
“Because you already took enough.”
She ended the call.
For several seconds, she remained perfectly still.
Then she sat down.
I pulled out the chair beside her.
“What did she want?”
Sarah looked at me.
“She wants me to sign another document.”
“What kind of document?”
