I frowned.
“Laura, calm down.”
“I can’t believe you did this!”
In the background, I could hear Brent shouting.
Then another voice.
A man’s voice.
Calm.
Professional.
And very unfamiliar.
“Mr. Brooks?”
I froze.
“Yes?”
“This is Daniel Harris. I’m calling regarding the Mercedes repair and the documentation your former wife and her husband signed yesterday.”
I looked at the clock.
5:03 a.m.
“Why are you calling me?”
There was a pause.
Then Daniel said something that made me sit completely upright.
“Because the insurance company has just opened an investigation into the accident.”
I stared into the darkness.
“What accident?”
Another pause.
“The accident your former wife’s husband reported.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did he report?”
Daniel’s voice became serious.
“He reported that the vehicle was still severely damaged when it left your shop.”
I looked toward the window.
Then at the locked drawer containing the photographs.
“That isn’t possible.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you calling me?”
Daniel took a breath.
“Because Mr. Craig, your documentation appears to prove that someone is lying.”
I heard Laura shouting my name in the background.
Then Daniel added quietly:
“And I’m afraid the insurance issue is only the beginning.”
Because when I opened the file that morning, I discovered that the Mercedes accident Brent had described had never happened the way he claimed.
