“What?”
“I need you both to sign the completion document.”
He frowned.
“What document?”
“It confirms that you inspected the vehicle, accepted the completed repairs, received the invoice, and agreed to the payment terms.”
Brent rolled his eyes.
“Fine.”
I placed the document on the desk.
He signed.
Laura signed underneath him.
Neither of them read the page carefully.
Brent pushed the paper back toward me.
“Happy?”
I nodded.
“Very.”
They took the keys and walked outside.
I watched the Mercedes disappear down the street.
Then I picked up the signed document.
I read it one more time.
Everything was exactly where it needed to be.
The photographs.
The repair records.
The parts receipts.
The invoice.
And their signatures acknowledging that the work had been completed and accepted.
I locked everything in my office.
Then I went home.
I didn’t sleep particularly well that night.
At 5:03 the next morning, my phone started vibrating across the nightstand.
I opened my eyes.
Laura.
I almost didn’t answer.
Then I remembered the boys.
I picked up.
“Hello?”
Her voice exploded through the phone.
“Craig! What did you do?”
I sat up.
“What are you talking about?”
“You knew!”
“Knew what?”
“You knew exactly what that document was!”
