The moment I opened the door, I noticed that something was different.
The lights had been dimmed, and the familiar living room looked almost unrecognizable. Small candles flickered on the shelves, casting warm shadows against the walls. Rose petals covered the wooden floor, forming a narrow trail that disappeared down the hallway.
A delicate fragrance filled the apartment.
For a moment, I stood in the doorway, unable to move.
Then I noticed a small white card lying among the petals.
I picked it up.
Three words were written across it in Daniel’s handwriting.
“Follow the roses.”
I laughed softly, pressing the card against my chest.
“Daniel, what have you done?” I whispered, although nobody answered.
My heart was already beating faster.
I followed the trail slowly, almost afraid that moving too quickly might somehow ruin the moment. The petals led me past the living room and toward the bathroom at the end of the hallway.
