Eventually, Daniel turned into the parking lot of a small café I had never visited before.
I parked several spaces away and watched him get out.
He stood beside his car for a moment, looking at his phone.
Then he slipped it into his pocket and walked inside.
I waited.
A minute passed.
Then another.
Finally, a woman entered the café.
She had long dark hair, wore a gray coat, and carried a large handbag over one shoulder. Daniel stood as soon as he saw her.
They exchanged a few words.
Then they sat down at a table near the window.
I leaned forward, trying to see their faces through the glass.
My heart began pounding when Daniel reached into his pocket.
He opened his hand.
Even from a distance, I recognized the flash of the diamond.
My ring.
He placed it on the table between them.
The woman stared at it.
