I needed answers.
And I intended to get them.
Where Was He Taking My Ring?
I grabbed my keys and hurried downstairs.
Daniel’s car was already leaving the parking lot.
I got into my own car and followed at a distance, telling myself that I simply needed to know where he was going.
Perhaps he intended to return the ring to the jewelry store.
Perhaps there had been a financial problem.
Perhaps he had made a mistake and was trying to fix it.
I considered every possible explanation, desperately searching for one that would not destroy the happiness I had felt only hours earlier.
But the longer I followed him, the more anxious I became.
He drove past the shopping district, where several jewelry stores stood along the main road.
He passed a pawnshop.
Then he continued toward the outskirts of town.
My hands tightened around the steering wheel.
If he wasn’t returning the ring to a store, where was he taking it?
