The first time we reached the forest, I immediately regretted coming.
The road ended near a cluster of old trees. Beyond them, a narrow path descended toward a stream that cut through the woods. The water was cold and clear, flowing over smooth stones beneath the morning sunlight.
Grandpa parked the car and took two walking sticks from the trunk.
“Stay close to me,” he said.
We followed the path until we reached a shallow section of the stream.
Then he turned toward me.
“Emily, you’ll need to change into the clothes you brought.”
I stared at him in disbelief.
“Here? Grandpa, why?”
“Because we’re going to have to step into the water.”
My stomach tightened.
“Absolutely not.”
He didn’t argue. He simply looked at the stream.
“Remember what we talked about? We can stop whenever you want.”
“Then why are we doing this at all?”
He took a long breath.
