But three months earlier, something had changed.
He began calling me before sunrise. He would arrive at our house, wait until my mother left for work, and then quietly ask me to come with him.
And every morning, we drove farther into the countryside.
At first, I thought he needed help repairing something on his property.
Then, one morning, he handed me a small bag containing a lightweight shirt, athletic shorts, and an old towel.
“Bring these,” he said.
I stared at him.
“Why do I need a change of clothes?”
“You’ll understand when we get there.”
“Grandpa, you keep saying that. Can’t you just tell me what we’re doing?”
He looked at me for a moment before opening the car door.
“Not yet, sweetheart.”
Something in his voice made me follow him, even though every instinct told me to ask more questions.
I wish I had understood then how much damage a well-intentioned secret could cause.
