Jacob shook his head.
“He’s going to lose that tape before the end of the night.”
“Probably,” I said.
When the curtain rose, I spotted Lily’s blue vest.
The crooked pocket was still there.
It looked wonderful beneath the stage lights.
Lily wasn’t acting in the play. She was helping backstage, making sure the actors had the right costumes and that everything was ready for the next scene.
I watched her move around the stage with quiet concentration.
She wasn’t thinking about the audience.
She wasn’t worrying about whether everyone was looking at her hair.
She was doing a job she had learned to do, and she looked proud of herself.
At the end of the performance, the audience applauded.
Jacob stood and clapped so enthusiastically that the woman in front of him turned around and smiled.
I laughed.
“You’re making enough noise for the entire school.”
“She deserves it.”
