“Next time, come alone. Your mother mustn’t see. We don’t have much time left.”
A chill ran through my entire body.
What did he mean by “we don’t have much time left”?
Why was my father arranging secret meetings with his granddaughter?
The following morning, I decided to confront him.
“Dad, what’s going on with Lily?”
He was sitting in his wheelchair.
My father had struggled to walk for the past five years.
“Nothing, sweetheart.”
“Then why does she visit you and come home crying?”
He looked away.
“Because there are things people should only learn when they’re ready.”
“What things?”
“You’ll understand soon.”
After that conversation, I could no longer look at him the same way.
On Sunday, Lily told me she was going to a friend’s house. But half an hour later, my neighbor called.
“Sweetheart, I just saw Lily near your father’s house. I didn’t realize you were having a family gathering today.”
