My mother glanced at Daniel.
Then she said something that made the room feel suddenly cold.
“Your father didn’t merely threaten him. He destroyed his family.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
And my mother began telling me a story that changed everything I thought I knew about my childhood.
Twenty years earlier, Victor had owned several pharmacies and had been preparing to expand his business. Daniel had worked at one of the smaller branches, where he discovered irregularities in the company’s medication records.
Certain medicines were being purchased in quantities that never appeared in the sales reports. Stock was disappearing. Invoices had been altered, and the accounts didn’t match.
Daniel suspected that someone inside the business was diverting expensive medication and concealing the money through false records.
He took his concerns to my father.
Victor dismissed him.
Then he threatened him.
Daniel should have walked away. Instead, he began collecting copies of the records.
