Peter called Daniel immediately.
“What were you talking about?”
There was silence on the other end.
Then Daniel said:
“Sarah wasn’t planning to get back together with you.”
Peter frowned.
“What?”
“She wanted to break you and Emma apart.”
Peter looked at Emma.
“Why?”
“Because she couldn’t stand the idea that you had actually moved on.”
Peter felt a strange sense of relief.
For a moment, he had been afraid there was some secret that could destroy everything.
But Daniel continued.
“She asked me to help her.”
Peter’s expression hardened.
“And you agreed?”
“I almost did.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Daniel sighed.
“Because I finally realized something.”
“What?”
“I lost Emma because I took her for granted. I wasn’t going to help Sarah do the same thing to you.”
Peter was silent.
Then Daniel said:
“Take care of her.”
The call ended.
Peter put the phone down.
Emma looked at him.
“What did he say?”
Peter smiled.
“Nothing that matters anymore.”
Emma raised an eyebrow.
“Are you sure?”
Peter took her hand.
“I’m sure.”
Months passed.
The fake relationship became real.
There were no more staged photographs.
No more jealousy games.
No more pretending.
Peter and Emma simply became themselves.
They learned each other’s habits.
They argued about stupid things.
They laughed at embarrassing moments.
They supported each other when life became difficult.
And slowly, the heartbreak that had brought them together became nothing more than a memory.
One evening, Peter took Emma back to the coffee shop where they had first met.
The same table was still there.
The same window.
The same rainy view outside.
Emma smiled.
“You planned this.”
Peter nodded.
“I did.”
“Why?”
Peter reached into his pocket.
Emma’s eyes widened.
“Peter…”
He took out a small box.
“I know we started this because we were trying to get two people back.”
Emma laughed through her tears.
“That’s one way to describe it.”
Peter smiled.
“But losing Sarah led me to you.”
He opened the box.
“And I don’t want to lose you.”
Emma covered her mouth.
“Peter…”
“I don’t know what the future will look like.”
He took her hand.
“But I know who I want beside me.”
Emma’s tears finally fell.
“Yes.”
Peter blinked.
“You didn’t even let me finish.”
“I know.”
They both laughed.
Then Emma pulled him into a hug.
The two people who had once sat in that coffee shop feeling completely abandoned were now holding each other, grateful that life had taken something away from them.
Because sometimes heartbreak feels like the end.
Sometimes losing someone feels like the greatest tragedy imaginable.
But sometimes…
the person you are desperately trying to get back isn’t the person you were meant to keep.
Peter thought Sarah was the love of his life.
Emma thought Daniel was the man she would spend forever with.
They were both wrong.
Their heartbreak had brought them together.
Their ridiculous plan had forced them to spend time together.
And somewhere between pretending to fall in love…
they actually did.
They didn’t get their exes back.
They got something better.
They found each other.
And years later, whenever someone asked Peter how he met Emma, he would smile and tell them:
“I was trying to get my ex back.”
Then he’d look at Emma.
“And accidentally found the woman I was supposed to marry.”
Emma would always laugh.
Because sometimes the best love stories don’t begin with two people looking for love.
Sometimes they begin with two broken hearts…
simply trying to survive.
