I thought my husband was picking our son up from school every Thursday — but one day, my boy casually asked, “Mom, why didn’t my other mom pick me up today like she usually does?”

She closed the classroom door behind me.

“Thank you for coming,” she said.

“Please sit down.”

I sat in an adult chair she had pulled up beside her desk — not a child’s chair, I noticed.

She had thought about this.

“I want to start by saying that Toby is doing beautifully,” she said.

“He’s happy, he’s social, he’s reading above grade level.

None of this is about his performance.”

“Okay,” I said.

“About six weeks ago, I noticed something during pickup.” She folded her hands.

“On Thursdays, Toby was consistently being collected by a woman I didn’t recognize.

Not you, not his father.

I checked the authorized pickup list — she wasn’t on it.”

My stomach dropped.

“I flagged it with the front office,” Mrs.

Patton continued.

“They said a man matching Ryan’s description had come in at the start of the school year and verbally authorized her.

But there was no written form.

No documentation.

Just a verbal instruction.”

“He authorized her verbally,” I repeated.

“Yes.

The front office should have required a written form.

That was their error and they’ve acknowledged it.” She looked at me carefully.

“I want to ask you directly: were you aware that this woman was picking Toby up?”
