I thought my husband was picking our son up from school every Thursday — but one day, my boy casually asked, “Mom, why didn’t my other mom pick me up today like she usually does?”

I read it three times.

Then I put the phone on the charger and went to bed.

I lay in the dark on my side of the mattress and listened to the house.

Toby breathing two doors down.

A car on the street.

The refrigerator.

Somewhere across the city, Ryan was on his brother’s couch.

Somewhere else, Daniela Reyes was in her apartment, probably looking at a pull-out sofa and a stuffed bear that didn’t belong there anymore.

And I was here.

Still here.

In the bed I had shared for eight years with a man who had looked me in the eye every Thursday evening and told me a lie so ordinary it had never once felt like one.

I didn’t sleep for a long time.

But when I did, I slept deeply.

And in the morning, there was a voicemail waiting that I had not expected.

It was from the school.

Not the main office — the direct line for Mrs.

Patton, Toby’s teacher.

She had called at 7:42 AM, before I was awake.

*Lauren, this is Sandra Patton.

I’m sorry to call so early.

I’ve been wanting to reach out for a few weeks but I wasn’t sure it was my place.
