I Surprised My Firefighter Husband at His Station for His Birthday – What His Captain Told Me Made My Stomach Drop

That hesitation terrified me.

I took one step toward him.

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

The word came quickly.

“Yes, Amanda. He’s alive.”

I closed my eyes.

For one second, I couldn’t breathe.

Then I opened them again.

“Where is he?”

“St. Matthew’s.”

“Why?”

“He was injured.”

The cake nearly slipped from my hands.

Grant stepped forward and caught the bottom of the box.

“I’ve got it.”

I let him take it.

My hands were shaking.

“How badly?”

Captain Reyes looked at me.

“There was a warehouse fire.”

My stomach tightened.

“How badly?”

“Part of the interior structure collapsed.”

“How badly?”

He finally answered.

“Three cracked ribs. A fractured shoulder. A concussion.”

I stared at him.

“He was conscious when they transported him.”

I didn’t hear anything after that.

I only heard the words I’d said that morning.

Don’t do anything crazy today.

And Tyler’s answer.

Love you.

I suddenly wished I had held him longer.

I wished I had kissed him twice.

I wished I had asked him to stay home.

I wished I had done everything differently.

“Why didn’t anyone call me?”

Captain Reyes frowned.

“We tried.”

“No.”

“Amanda, we did.”

I pulled out my phone.

“No one called.”
