Then closed it.
He looked toward the office.
My heart started beating faster.
“What?”
Still nothing.
“Is Tyler here?”
Grant finally said, “Amanda…”
The way he said my name made my stomach drop.
Captain Reyes came out of the office.
I’d known him for years.
Usually, when he saw me, he’d grin and say something like:
“What did Tyler do now?”
This time, he didn’t smile.
He looked at the cake.
Then the balloons.
Then me.
He walked toward me slowly.
“You don’t know yet?”
I stared at him.
“Know what?”
He glanced toward the others.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
“Captain?”
He took a breath.
“Amanda, put the cake down.”
My fingers tightened around the box.
“No.”
“Amanda.”
“Where is my husband?”
His expression changed.
“He isn’t here.”
“I can see that.”
My voice was sharper now.
“Where is he?”
One of the balloons slipped loose from my wrist.
It floated toward the ceiling.
Nobody tried to catch it.
Captain Reyes looked at me.
“There was an incident this morning.”
My entire body went cold.
“What kind of incident?”
“Tyler was on a call.”
“He was fine when he left.”
“I know.”
“Then what happened?”
Captain Reyes hesitated.
