The Truth Daniel Finally Needed to Hear
Daniel came to my apartment on a Sunday afternoon.
He looked tired.
I let him in without asking questions.
We sat on the couch while a football game played quietly in the background.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then he said, “Dad’s engaged to Natalie.”
I turned toward him.
“Already?”
“The divorce should be final soon. He says they’ve been happy together for years.”
I shook my head.
“That must be difficult to hear.”
Daniel gave a humorless laugh.
“You have no idea.”
He stared at his hands.
“I went to Mom’s bookstore yesterday.”
I waited.
“It’s actually really good.”
I smiled.
“Don’t sound so surprised.”
“I’m not surprised. I’m impressed.”
He paused.
“She remembers every customer’s name. She helped a little girl find a book about animals, and the kid hugged her before leaving. Mom looked happier than I’ve seen her in years.”
