Karen extended her hand.
“Natalie. I hope the evening goes well.”
Natalie hesitated before shaking it.
“You too.”
Karen turned back to Michael.
“Enjoy the gala.”
And she walked away.
There was no argument.
No tears.
No scene.
That was what made it so satisfying.
Michael had expected Karen to be desperate for an explanation, eager for an apology, or humiliated by the sight of him with another woman.
Instead, she had treated him like a former colleague whose conversation she no longer needed.
Later that evening, Karen stood near the bookstore’s display while the program director thanked her publicly for supporting the literacy initiative.
Michael watched from across the room.
The woman he had dismissed as dependent and emotionally fragile was building a successful business, making new connections, and receiving recognition for something she had created herself.
He could not claim credit for any of it.
And he could not stop it.
