PART 2 — THE MAN I THOUGHT I KNEW
I couldn’t move.
The letter was still trembling in my hands.
My father had written that Daniel wasn’t really Daniel.
His real name was Michael Ward.
And Noah—the son I had spent sixteen years protecting—was supposedly not Daniel’s biological child.
He was my father’s son.
None of it made sense.
Then Daniel stepped farther into the kitchen.
Rainwater dripped from his clothes onto the floor. Blood ran from the cut above his eyebrow, but he barely seemed to notice.
His eyes were fixed on the letter.
“Sarah,” he said quietly, “please put it down.”
I stared at him.
“Who are you?”
He closed his eyes.
For the first time since I had known him, I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“You finally know,” he whispered.
My voice shook.
“Did you poison us?”
“No.”
“Did you hire those men?”
“No.”
“Did you tell the police I was dangerous?”
He hesitated.
“Yes.”
My heart broke.
“Why?”
Daniel looked toward Noah.
“Because I needed them to believe you were unstable.”
Noah stepped forward.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel looked at him for several seconds.
“I needed the police to think your mother was dangerous before the people hunting your family found her.”
Noah’s face went pale.
“Who are you?”
Daniel swallowed.
“My name isn’t Daniel.”
The room seemed to shrink around us.
“My real name is Michael Ward.”
I looked at the letter again.
The name was there.
Michael Ward.
Exactly as my father had written it.
“You married me under a fake name?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father asked me to.”
I almost laughed.
It was too absurd to be true.
“My father disappeared twenty-three years ago.”
Michael’s expression changed.
“He didn’t disappear.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“He went into hiding.”
A voice came from the hallway.
“No, Michael.”
Everyone turned.
A man slowly stepped into the kitchen.
Older.
Gray hair.
A scar running across his cheek.
My breathing stopped.
I knew that face.
I had seen it in my nightmares for twenty-three years.
My father.
He looked directly at me.
“I’m the reason you’re alive.”
Noah moved closer to me.
“Mom…”
I couldn’t answer.
My father was standing in front of me.
Alive.
After all these years.
Michael turned toward him.
“You were never supposed to come here.”
My father gave him a cold smile.
“Neither were you.”
Then his eyes moved to Noah.
And something in his expression changed.
Regret.
Fear.
Almost sadness.
“But the boy changed everything.”
I stepped between them.
“What did you do to my son?”
My father shook his head.
“I didn’t do anything to him.”
He pointed at Noah.
“His existence destroyed the entire plan.”
Noah stared at him.
“What plan?”
My father didn’t answer immediately.
Then Michael spoke.
“Because Noah was never supposed to be born.”
The words hit me like a slap.
“No.”
Michael looked at me.
“Sarah, listen to me.”
“No!”
I backed away.
“You’re all lying.”
My father shook his head.
“You were supposed to disappear twenty-three years ago.”
“Why?”
“Because they were looking for you.”
“Who?”
He looked toward the windows.
“The people who killed your mother.”
I froze.
Michael continued.
“And the people who killed your grandfather.”
I looked at my father.
“But you’re my father.”
Michael’s voice dropped.
“No.”
I turned toward him.
He pointed at the older man.
“That isn’t your father.”
The man smiled.
“My name is Victor Ward.”
I couldn’t breathe.
Victor Ward.
Another name.
Another lie.
Another piece of my life that had apparently been built on deception.
Then the lights suddenly went out.
The kitchen disappeared into darkness.
Someone screamed.
A gunshot exploded from the hallway.
Glass shattered.
The police shouted.
Noah grabbed my hand.
“Mom!”
Michael moved in front of us.
“Stay behind me!”
Another shot rang out.
I heard someone running.
Then a hidden alarm began screaming somewhere inside the walls.
Michael grabbed my shoulders.
His face was inches from mine.
“Sarah, whatever happens next, don’t let them take Noah.”
“Why?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because your son isn’t the secret they’re after.”
He looked toward the dark hallway.
“He’s the evidence.”
And then we heard footsteps coming toward us.
Not one person.
Several.
They were coming from inside the house.
And whoever was leading them already knew exactly where Noah was.
