David accused me of still having feelings for Marcus, of comparing our relationship to what I’d had with him. I defended myself, insisting that my past was exactly that, past, and that I’d chosen David for a reason.
But David’s insecurities ran deeper than I’d realized.
He’d always known he was different from the men I’d dated before him. Where they’d been spontaneous and exciting, he was steady and reliable. Where they’d been confident to the point of arrogance, he was modest and self-deprecating.
David’s voice cracked when he asked the question that would destroy everything we’d built together.
He looked at me with tears in his eyes and demanded to know what Marcus had that he didn’t. What was it about my ex that made me react so strongly to seeing him?
I should have told him the truth. That Marcus represented a painful chapter of my life that I’d closed long ago. That seeing him had simply caught me off guard.
