She hung up. She turned to me.
“She says she told you so,” Willa said. “And she says she already booked her flight for
graduation.”
Mrs. Whitaker kept her word. All three conditions.
In May, she flew back from Oregon. Susan came with her. They stayed at a hotel near the high
school. On the day of graduation, Mrs. Whitaker sat next to me in the metal bleachers of the football stadium in a pale yellow dress and a big straw hat, holding her cane between her knees.
When they called Willa’s name, Willa Rose Brennan, Mrs. Whitaker stood up. She didn’t cheer. She
didn’t clap. Mrs. Whitaker is not a cheerer or a clapper.
She just stood there, very straight, with her hand pressed flat against her heart, and watched my daughter walk across the stage.
I stood up next to her. And without saying anything, she reached over and took my hand.
