Blake Haron laughed the moment I stepped onto the mat.
Not a nervous laugh.
Not a respectful laugh.
The kind of laugh a man gives when he has already decided how the story ends.
The parents in the bleachers leaned forward.
Phones came up.
Everyone wanted to see the arrogant martial arts champion teach a lesson to the old mechanic who had challenged him.
Blake cracked his neck.
“You sure you want this?”
I looked at him.
“I want you to understand something.”
He smiled.
“That you’re sorry?”
“No.”
I glanced toward the door where my son had disappeared.
“I want you to understand what happens when someone mistakes cruelty for strength.”
The room became quiet.
Blake shook his head.
“You people always think you know better than professionals.”
I didn’t answer.
The referee, one of the senior instructors, stepped between us.
“Rules?”
Blake immediately said:
“Full contact.”
A few parents exchanged uncomfortable looks.
The instructor hesitated.
“Blake…”
“Blake…”
But Blake waved him off.
“Relax. I won’t hurt him.”
That sentence told me everything.
A person who truly understood power never needed to announce that they could control it.
The bell rang.
Blake moved first.
Fast.
Very fast.
