I have thought about that a great deal. It was not carelessness about the house.
It was that I did not think of that house as a thing that could ever be a question.
My mother stood in a doorway and told my wife she owned nothing, in a building that has had my wife’s name and nobody else’s on the title since 2021.

The paperwork Marin was laughing about was real and I have seen it.
It is a transfer of the property from Amara to me, drawn up by a solicitor in the September, with a recital about protecting a family asset from a spouse’s financial mismanagement.
There is a two-page supporting statement attached. It is signed by my mother and my sister. It describes my wife as erratic with money, as having run the household account dry twice, and as having had cards declined in public on multiple occasions.
Every card in that house was declined because my mother added herself as a signatory to the household account in the July, using a form I signed in a hospital car park while she was going into surgery and told me it was for the anaesthetist.
