The room went back to normal in about two seconds.
Twenty-five people. My mother’s own sister. Two of my wife’s friends who had been invited.
Nobody said one word.
And I was standing at the sideboard with a bottle in my hand, eleven feet away, and I did not say anything either.
I told myself she was seventy and post-operative and that making something of it would ruin my uncle’s seventieth.
My wife sat at the end of that table for four hours.
PART 3 — 2021
Here is the thing my mother did not know and my sister did not know and, until the Thursday morning, I had genuinely forgotten.
I bought that house in 2018.
In the March of 2021 the business took on a facility to fund the Verrin City warehouse, and my accountant restructured everything I owned so that the house sat outside the exposure.
The house was transferred into Amara’s sole name.
Not joint. Sole. On advice, deliberately, for exactly that reason, and it has been hers on the register for four years and six months.
I signed it. It was in a pack of about twenty documents on a Thursday afternoon and my accountant tabbed the pages and I signed where the tabs were and I did not read one line of it.
