I could hardly breathe.
Then my phone rang.
It was Patricia.
I watched her name flash across the screen before answering.
“Gabriel,” she said, sounding strangely calm. “We need to talk.”
“About what?”
“About Sofia. About everything you’ve been telling people.”
“I haven’t been telling people stories, Patricia. I’ve been reporting what happened.”
She exhaled sharply.
“You have no idea what you’re doing. You’ve taken a family disagreement and turned it into a criminal investigation.”
I said nothing.
Then she made a mistake.
“Did you go into my bedroom?”
I stared at the concealed compartment.
“Why?”
“Because there are private documents in there that have nothing to do with Sofia.”
My heart began pounding.
“Which documents?”
She hesitated.
“I don’t have to explain my personal affairs to you.”
“Then why are you worried about what I found?”
“I’m not worried.”
Her voice had risen.
I could hear the strain in it now.
