I came home from a late-night business trip and found my daughter washing clothes by hand in complete darkness.

There was also a handwritten list of dates, several of which matched the times Sofia had told me she had been forbidden to use the family telephone.

I did not know what the connections meant.

I refused to jump to conclusions.

But I knew enough to understand that the documents needed professional examination.

The digital recorder was also logged and preserved.

I was told not to handle the files or contact anyone whose name appeared in the records. The investigators would determine what the evidence showed and whether any financial wrongdoing had occurred.

I agreed.

I wanted the truth, not a theory that might collapse under scrutiny.

Before leaving the room, I looked again at the photograph of Patricia and me on the dressing table.

She had stood beside me in front of our friends and family and promised to care for Sofia.

All the while, she might have been trying to gain control over the money Elena had left for our daughter.
