Two years of a man ringing his widowed mother on a Sunday evening and telling her, without a thought in his head, exactly how his wife was doing.
And a woman at the other end writing it down afterwards, in date order, in a notebook, with my name against it as the source.
The eleventh of March.
And then there is the entry that stopped being a family matter.
***11 March — rang the maternity unit. Spoke to a woman. Gave concerns re her state of mind + the nursery + the weight. Didn’t give my name, said family member. She said it’ll go on the notes.***
It did go on the notes.
There is a line on my wife’s maternity record from the eleventh of March, 2025, recording a telephone contact from an unnamed family member raising concerns about the mother’s mental health.
Maia found out about it at an appointment on the second of April, when a midwife asked her — kindly, carefully, as they are supposed to — whether there was anything at home she wanted to talk about, and then told her why she was asking.
