“Mom, you’re scaring me.”
“Please, Daniel. Just sit down.”
He lowered himself onto the bench beside me.
I unlocked my phone, opened the video, and handed it to him.
“I need you to watch something.”
He accepted the phone without asking another question.
At first, his face showed nothing but confusion. He watched the man leave the hotel, saw the woman step beside him, and frowned as though he were trying to understand why I was showing him a stranger.
Then the man turned slightly toward the camera.
Daniel stopped breathing.
He watched the video again.
This time, he zoomed in on the woman.
“No.”
His voice was barely audible.
I reached for his hand.
“Daniel…”
“No. That’s not Jenna.”
I couldn’t speak.
He looked at me, his eyes suddenly desperate.
“Tell me that’s not Jenna.”
“I’m so sorry.”
He looked back at the screen. His thumb shook as he paused the video on the moment Mark’s arm tightened around her waist.
