I thought about Mark coming home late, kissing my shoulder, and asking whether I had watched the news.
“I don’t know.”
But I was beginning to understand one thing.
Mark had been counting on my trust.
And I had given it to him for so long that I had stopped questioning whether he deserved it.
That night, Daniel called out of work. He told his supervisor he had a family emergency and needed the evening off.
Then he checked the accounts he shared with Jenna.
They had been married for only three months, but they had already started saving toward a house. They had agreed to combine certain expenses and put money aside each month.
Daniel opened the account history.
He went quiet.
“What is it?” I asked.
He scrolled back through the transactions.
“There’s money missing.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know yet.”
He spent nearly an hour checking each transfer.
