There were three men standing in front of the house.
Her father stood on the left.
Vittorio Moretti stood on the right.
The man in the middle had his face turned slightly away from the camera, but Camilla could still see his features.
She recognized the face immediately.
It was Edoardo.
Not the Edoardo she knew today, but a much younger version of him, perhaps no more than ten years old.
Camilla stared at the photograph.
Her father had known Edoardo’s family long before she and Edoardo became friends.
And he had hidden the photograph alongside the documents that had nearly destroyed her life.
Her phone rang again.
This time, it was Edoardo himself.
“Camilla,” he said quietly, “there’s something I need to tell you about my father.”
She could barely speak.
“What does your family have to do with this?”
Edoardo took a deep breath.
“My father worked for Vittorio Moretti twenty years ago. He was the person who discovered the forged property records. He tried to expose them, but he disappeared before he could testify.”
