Camilla smiled.
“I suppose I owe you an apology for thinking I understood everything about you.”
She remained there for several minutes, listening to the familiar sounds of the house.
Then her phone rang.
It was the detective.
“Camilla, we’ve found something else.”
She straightened.
“What is it?”
“We recovered a second envelope from the hidden passage. It was sealed inside a plastic container, apparently left there years ago.”
“What’s inside?”
“A photograph and a letter. The photograph is of your father, Vittorio Moretti, and another man.”
Camilla closed her eyes.
“Another man?”
“Yes. We believe the third person may be the key to the entire case.”
“Who is he?”
The detective hesitated.
“That’s the problem. We don’t know yet. But the letter suggests your father was afraid of him.”
Camilla felt a chill move through her.
“Can you send me the photograph?”
“I already have.”
Her phone vibrated.
She opened the image.
