Part 3 — “People Did”
Kimberly was quiet for a moment.
“Because,” she finally said, “some people think nobody will stop them.”
Amani looked down at her boarding pass.
“But people did.”
Kimberly smiled.
“Yes,” she said. “They did.”
A little later, Amani’s father called again.
“Are you okay?”
“I am now,” Amani answered.
Marcus paused before saying something she would remember for a long time.
“Never make yourself smaller just to make someone else comfortable. If something belongs to you, you don’t have to apologize for having it.”
Amani smiled.
Outside the window, the runway stretched into the distance.
Soon, the plane began moving.
As it lifted into the sky, Amani looked out the window, still holding her boarding pass.
The incident had started with something as simple as a seat.
But it had become something much bigger.
Everyone on that plane had witnessed what could happen when someone believed they were powerful enough to ignore the rules.
And they had also witnessed something else.
Sometimes, one person speaks up.
Another person joins them.
Then another.
And suddenly, the person being treated unfairly isn’t standing alone anymore.
Amani leaned back in her seat.
This time, nobody told her to move.
Because everyone knew one simple truth:
The seat was hers.
